Overview

A mixed conifer - hardwood forest normally occurring in the southern part of the state, often on dry, acidic slopes.

Common on midslopes on rocky, shallow well-drained soils, with few nutrients. The community grades into Northern Hardwood - Hemlock- White Pine Forests to the north and on moister sites, which typically have more hemlock. To the south and on drier sites, White Pine - Oak Forest and Mixed Oak Forest become more common.
